This 1948 Indian Chief, finished in black, is powered by a 1.2L (74ci) V-twin engine paired with a three-speed sliding-gear transmission, featuring a hand-shifter and foot-clutch. Refurbished in the 1990s by Jerry Greer and John Bevins at Indian Engineering in Deadwood, South Dakota, it was reportedly acquired by the editor of Cycle World magazine, featured in a 1997 article, and later purchased by the seller in 2015 from the previous owner’s estate. The bike is now offered with a Cycle World article and a clean title.
The motorcycle’s exterior showcases a black finish on the fuel tanks and skirted fenders, with brightwork including a front-fender headdress light, fender-skirt trim, front and rear chrome protection bars, a rear-fender guard, and a chrome headlight bucket. It features footboards, a side stand, a locking toolbox on the left-rear fender skirt, and an embossed natural leather sprung saddle. Chrome 16″ rims, laced to drum brake hubs, are fitted with period-style Armstrong tires showing age cracks. Suspension comprises a hydraulically damped girder-and-coil fork and frame-mounted plunger shocks. The bike was professionally detailed in 2024, highlighting its refurbished condition, though it has not been ridden since 2015.
The chrome handlebar includes a left-side spark-advance control and a right-side twist-grip throttle, with a friction-plate steering damper adjustment knob below. A chrome tank-top dash panel, positioned between chrome fuel and oil fill caps, houses a 120-mph speedometer, a keyed ignition switch, and a battery-warning light, with the five-digit odometer showing 1,000 miles; true mileage is unknown. The 74ci V-twin, equipped with an M344 Linkert carburetor, a chrome air-filter cover, and a chrome two-into-one exhaust system, uses fiber oil pump washers instead of stock lead washers for improved sealing. Power is transferred to the rear wheel via a drive chain.
This Indian Chief is an extremely nice, meticulously refurbished classic motorcycle, featuring a sleek black finish, a comfortable sprung saddle, and a reliable V-twin engine, with a notable history tied to Cycle World and expert restoration, making it an ideal choice for collectors or vintage enthusiasts seeking a show-quality bike with historical significance and timeless style.
